Enchanted Arms

That’s another RPG on Xbox 360, which I remember with a smile. That was one of the first games I’ve got, and to tell you the truth, I was feeling like I’m playing Final Fantasy X version for Xbox :) You can find many similarities in the battle system, in world exploring, and even characters look like a copies of Tidus, Yuna, Rikku (if these names tells you anything, if not – they are the main characters of FFX, available on PS2 only).

When I’ve got this game, I had a huge thirst for RPG’s. Maybe that’s why I have very good opinion about this game, while many of review sites gave only average scores. But don’t forget – when I opened this blog I promised to tell you my true opinion, so here you go – this game is must try!

First, the video intro’s are incredible. There aren’t many of them, but when you see them – you know that creators really gave their hearts to do it. Queen of the ice – awwww, so beautiful and so mad evil at the same time! You have to play to see what I mean. Secondly, battle system is kind of interesting. Turn based, you and enemy have your own fields which you cannot leave. You can only attack enemies while standing in your side of the “fence”, and to reach enemies who are far away, you have to use spells which can reach further.  That may sound strange until you try it, but it actually works. Now while this battle system doesn’t have too many fans, I’m one of them. Turn, grid, strategy based battle – way to go sir! Especially if you lie on your sofa and don’t want to be involved in any button mashing activities. And lastly, don’t forget the music! Sound in the game is really awesome, especially the one in the battle. That tune still sounds in my head..

Now the bad things.. Yes, story is a little weak, and characters sometimes plainly stupid! Also, there is one very annoying character, who… well, I’ll leave it to you to find out. Maybe you’ll actually like him :) The other thing which I don’t like too much, is the random battles. You are exploring in open area, there are no enemies which you can see. And then boom, you are attacked by someone! Looks strange, especially when you are running for your save checkpoint. :)

Here are the gameplay of the game. Check if you are into such things..

Buying part at the end, as always. Amazon currently has a copy for 20.99$. Strangely enough, this copy with a comic book comes cheaper than a single copy (30$). I’m not sure how long the supplies will last on Amazon.. If you happen to click on the link and there is no more games left for this price, sorry :)

Record of Agarest War

That’s another Japanese Xbox 360 RPG. Probably, if you are not fan of turn based games, you should skip this post. But I’m pretty sure you are lover of such genre, so check out this hot game! And when I say hot.. I really mean it ;) Not just because of the really good battle system, but because of the eye candy which you can find, especially if you are into Japanese Anime girls.

So what I loved about this game? Of course, the battle system. From the first look it’s very similar to Disgaea, but when you start playing, you find quite a few differences. First, battle is divided into two phases – one is for moving only, second is for fighting. That means, if you moved your character wrong direction in the first phase, you will not be able to attack at all in the second part (called attack phase). That’s where the fun comes in – you can “link” characters and attack enemies even if they are out of your attack reach field. Each character has his own linkable battle fields, usually wide dispersed in the battlefield. If your other toon happens to be in these linked fields, who-la – you can unleash hell by combining attacks into mega-devastating arts. That gives a really good feeling (and a really bad feeling when enemy is using these mega attacks on you!).

Another thing I’ve enjoyed, is variety of guns, armors and other equipment. At the beginning of the game it’s pretty hard to get some good items, but later, after you gathered some required pieces, you can get wide variety of them. To tell you the truth, you will be spending some time in the cities. You will need to visit blacksmith for enchanting and creating new stuff, stores to buy and sell items, then Adventure’s league to get new recipes and so on. Too bad you can’t actually “walk” in the city, but on the other hand, it saves you a lot of time which you can spend fighting the bad guys.

Here comes the bad part about the game. First, if you are lover of high graphic quality in-game, you will be very to disappointed to see games graphics. There are no video clips between story. Well, you could say that video clips are not something very-very exciting about truth RPG’s, but even in-game graphics are very poor too. It’s like you were playing on Nintendo. Well, maybe more like first Xbox.. If you can overcome that, you will enjoy the game. Don’t forget that you can still enjoy the images of the girls, and they are drawn very artistic. Secondly, there is no English voice-over. To understand the story, you will have to read every dialogue (poor eyes of the guys playing with small TV’s!). Even though characters are speaking, you still don’t understand a thing, unless you are Japanese :)

From my heart, I would give this game 7.5/10 . It’s a nice game to spend some time on (and some dollars lol). I’m still playing it, about 30 hours into game-play, and the end is nowhere to be seen!

I know you guys would like to see some game-play. Let me find something for you :)

For ones who are interested, Amazon now sells this game for 21.31$

Resonance of Fate

This is a real treasure in the collection of Xbox 360 RPG games. SEGA recently started to release some really nice games (Valkyria Chronicles comes to mind). If you are into turn based RPG stuff, and you tired of all the swords, knives, magic and stuff – that’s a relief for your brain and your fingers. This game has only real guns.

There are two interesting things about this game. First, of course, is battle system. You have 2 or 3 toons at your side, and you take turns in the battle. One of the characters shoots with temporary damage bullets (which penetrates really well, but don’t do any “Real damage”). Other characters shoot with real damage bullets, which are only good if temporary damage was applied before.. You need to play it to understand what I really mean, but believe me – that’s a very nice solution for such gun style RPG.

Another thing which makes this game different from others, is exploring. You are not controlling actual character in the exploration phase.. It’s just a pointer. But, to explore the area’s, you first have to uncover them by placing tetris-like figures, which you can get only by defeating monsters. Then , you can use different colors of these blocks to transfer power from tower to tower, and get some really valuable bonus to your drops, exp rate and so on.

This game was released at similar time like FFXIII, so it didn’t get many attention (everyone was going for FFXIII). But after everyone found out that final fantasy was really shitty button masher, Resonance Of Fate become the substitution for this rpg hunger. And you know what? It’s a really good substitute..

There is a short video review on gametrailers, so you can check it out and decide if you wanna buy this game or not:

This game currently cost $24 at Amazon.com. Should you pay such amount for this game? It’s really up to you. I was happy to get this game on my machine, and I still play this game now and then..
